Automatically measure the area of polygon regions using the "Auto Fill" function

There are many scenarios in technical drawings where areas are measured:

  • Measure the area of various types of plants and trees on landscaping drawings.
  • Measure the area of the house on the building construction and decoration drawings.
  • And area measurements of tunnel cross-sections, roadway greenbelts, base cross-sections, and so on.

These areas are often complex polygons or arcs, and engineers can only divide them into rectangles or trace points one by one to estimate the area. Not only is it time-consuming, but the results are often inaccurate!

Now, PDFBlueprint gives you an ultimate solution: Auto Fill.

Help you quickly and accurately measure the area of the polygon region!

Auto fill measurement examples are as follows:

Here's the tutorial for the Auto Fill function:

1. First of all, make sure your computer has installed PDFBlueprint.

If not yet installed, please download the installation package from the official website and install it.

Official website:https://pdf.fastcadreader.com/

2. Open a drawing in PDF format where you need to measure the area of the polygon region.

3. Set Scale

Click the "Scale" button. Left-click to specify two points of a line segment of known length on the drawing that is as long as possible. Then enter the actual lengths of the line segment in the dialog box. and then start measuring. This way the scale is set and you can start working on the measurement.

Note:

  • You can set the scale more accurately by clicking on the capture points (center point (), point on the line (), end point (), and intersection point (×)).
  • PDF drawings converted from CAD can capture points on the drawing. Scanned PDF drawings cannot capture points.

4. Click the "Measure" button. In the "Measure" panel, click the "Auto Fill" function. Then it will enter the "Auto Fill" state, and will display the "Auto Fill Options" panel.

Explanation of Auto Fill Options:

  • Fill Size: The larger the fill size is, the larger the filling range will be after each click. It is recommended to use a large fill size when filling a large area and a small fill size when repairing a small area.
  • Edge sensitivity: Edge sensitivity affects the range that filling can reach. When there is no pattern interference in the filled area, it is recommended to choose "high" edge sensitivity. When there is pattern interference in the filled area, it is recommended to choose "low" edge sensitivity.

5. According to the drawing, in the filling process, adjust the Auto Fill Options at any time, in the area to be filled, click or hold down the left button of the mouse to fill.

6. For the unfilled position, you can click to fix it, with the zoom function to fix it more accurately.

Tips for adjusting Auto Fill Options:

a. For smaller or narrower fill areas, try turning down the fill size.

b. For larger fill areas, try turning up the fill size.

c. For those who can't fill with the default "Middle" edge sensitivity, try changing the edge sensitivity to "Low".

d. For filling overflows with the default "Middle" edge sensitivity, try changing the edge sensitivity to "High".

Tips for using Auto Fill:

a. Double-click for a quick fill.

b. When the fill spreads out of the filled area, you can press the SPACE bar or Ctrl+Z to return to the previous step.

c. When there are gaps or dotted lines in the filled area that do not form a closed area, you can use the "Line" function to close the gaps or dotted lines.

d. Auto Fill can not measure the area with holes in the center, for the area with holes, please split it into at least 2 areas without holes for measurement, you can use the "Line" function to assist in splitting.

e. If more than one closed area is filled during a single fill, the area and perimeter will be generated separately for each closed area.
